One day, when I was a freshman in high school,

It looked like he was carrying all of his books. 4 Q) ]! k# C+ X" N

I thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?
; u3 W, S# Q- }" E) V; c7 [3 c- u4 q% k
He must really be a nerd." + V# S# A! Q! n* Y

W4 O6 E; r5 g; H0 d; t
I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.

As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.

2 f! K/ U. [9 _7 O D, L
. Y7 h, s' c: |" M! G" MThey ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.

His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him. 8 D4 G& J$ \, }5 }+ }; E
. u8 C; a- d+ s5 U3 J' T- ^8 C k% [" O
He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes ( r! d% a. J; X' H! n8 }
# w. r( a7 m9 S+ r& G. h8 ^
- z4 u& C; A+ k7 EMy heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.

9 G8 G8 d6 I: ~As I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.

" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!" : R9 S/ W8 ~- n. U' P

a4 p! Q3 }' [+ o7 F1 BThere was a big smile on his face.

It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude. ) l* I, v( {/ I- c" K3 V

% I% T2 M! b; _1 t ]) BI helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived

! B3 y+ d* B/ jAs it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.

7 }% [2 u: K6 o" q6 ]He said he had gone to private school before now. 0 P, |3 m% i1 N1 l3 P
4 M; o- Y, Y7 |I would have never hung out with a private school kid before. % Y: ?# R. P) x4 M" [* ?4 @
/ t6 i. ~. F& M- qWe talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books. ( W& v& q2 y/ _# P7 {( ]

He turned out to be a pretty cool kid.

) L# J: ?- a) {/ e! o% FI asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends 7 i4 x; O" b( Y( w7 ^' B# L

We hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.

Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again. $ v: T4 b/ U. R: N( H8 g/ \
+ w2 a% X% u' Z$ ^+ ^+ RI stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!

"He just laughed and handed me half the books. " D# M9 W& j1 }2 z; o

Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends. 1 K$ X; t/ e' o: m

Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I

, M4 ]" ], `) l f* j% s) IHe was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.

Graduation day, I saw Kyle.

He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.

He filled out and actually looked good in glasses.

I could see that he was nervous about his speech. 4 L! P" z+ \9 s, M8 b

He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled. 9 C! I. Q1 O- A8 Y; r

As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began

Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends... 4 S G1 _( _" O& R

I am here to tell all of you that being a friend to someone is the best gift you can give them.

I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met. ! ^* U" A' j* b1 @3 O- \

He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home. 6 x4 {/ N4 Q, W

) r# d) R, B- |% {, FHe looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.
& a/ Q2 e9 R% M" V# Y& h4 R
, c8 e _; M* C& U" ^) A"Thankfully, I was saved.

9 y1 f+ i5 w6 P( t+ b/ m5 rMy friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."

9 [* f5 r4 f$ y" g1 _0 YI heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment. . u c# g2 I) r3 d% J* T) L

I saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile. ; t8 x7 g4 n# e+ I

Not until that moment did I realize its depth.

Never underestimate the power of your actions.

For better or for worse.

God puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.
